PRACTICES Beginners Ashtanga - Level 1 This is an entry level Ashtanga class introducing some basic philosophy and helping to give an understanding of the science and foundations of the practice. Ujjayi breathing and basic movements are taught in order to experience the concept of this ancient lifestyle. Intro to Ashtanga - Level 1/2 This an introduction to the fundamentals of Ashtanga. We will explore the foundations of the practice such as Suryanamaskara and the standing postures while focusing on controlled "ujjayi" breathing to help teach about "vinyasa", movement and breath together in a rhythmic pattern. Half Primary Series - Level 2 This is a led Ashtanga Vinyasa class up to Navasana. Students should have a good understanding of Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations) as we progress into the standing postures for balance and stability, and half of the seated postures (Primary Series) which begin to strengthen the front and lengthen the back of the body. Spinal twists and some restorative finishing postures are introduced for a well rounded practice. Primary Series - Level 2/3 This is the 1st series in the traditional practice of Ashtanga Yoga. It's a healing practice where the practitioner links controlled movements to a conscious breathing pattern. This creates an intense heat inside the body which cleanses the internal organs while strengthening the physical body and calming the mind. A dilligent practice, in turn, cultivates a deep calming wisdom bringing the aspirant closer to the non-dualistic idea of love, the Universal Self. * Participants should have some previous experience with Ashtanga Vinyasa. Mysore This is the traditional method of learning the healing science of Ashtanga. Each student practices individually at his/ her own pace, learning the system to proficiency, one posture at a time under the guidance of the instructor. * If you do not have a regular Ashtanga practice, it is recommended that you commit to a minimum of 3 days a week to learn the system and experience the benefits. Intro to Pranayama- Level 2+ This class begins with a brief philosophy on yogic breathing in relation to traditional Ashtanga followed by a short asana practice to warm and open the hips in order to create a comfortable seat. Finally, based on classic breathing exercises, we explore a way of establishing a practice that is safe and intelligent and allows the practitioner to progress deeper into the peaceful realm of "yoga". Donation Ashtanga Community Class This class is free! Please donate what you are able to in order to contribute to the teachings and the space. This is a good opportunity for parents and students to get a "taste" of what the asana (physical) practice of Ashtanga Yoga is about. This is a class suitable for all levels, based on the classical Primary Series of Ashtanga vinyasa. Suggested donation is anywhere from $5 to $25, however any amount is appreciated.
